What is meant by empowerment?
Empowerment is an active multidimensional process which enable women to realize their identity and powers in all spheres of life including greater authority in decision making, capabilities to plan their lives and greater knowledge about the circumstances that can affect their lives. Men and women both are substantial part of society. But in male dominated society, female population is the deprived and marginalized group of society.
Men and women are equal:
Men and women are created equal however the phenomenon of empowerment of women illustrates that initially they have been disempowered. Empowerment , in relation to men , is generally seen in women. The status of women is the measuring tool for scaling how much empowerment is required on the part of women. Both men and women can remain in power simultaneously, and empowering women doesn’t imply disempowering men.
Basic components of Empowerment:
Empowerment is not only restricted to the physical or material aspects of life but it also reflects their intellectual and emotional development and their relationship is reciprocal in nature.
For instance, for a women to be economically independent and socially active, her self esteem and confidence need to be raised. First, she needs to be sensitized into her status in the society and it’s implication for herself and those around her, only then can she rise to achieve the physical codes of empowerment.
There are seven basic components regarding the empowerment of women ;
Awareness of their rights :Human rights are basic rights that belong to all of us simply because we are human. Society is based over some measure values such as fairness, dignity, equality and respect . For those who may face abuse , neglect and isolation, empowerment is an important means for all of us in all aspects of life.
Improvement in living standard :
Standard of living of a country is measured by its level of income, comforts and services available generally applied to a society or location ,instead of an individual .
Standard of living is significant because it has a wide impact on an individual’s quality of life Standard of living involves the following factors such as the quality and availability of employment class disparity , poverty rate , quality and housing affordability. Hours required to purchase necessities, gross domestic product, inflation rate, amount of leisure time, access to and quality of healthcare, quality and availability of education, literacy rates, life expectancy, occurrence of diseases, cost of goods and services, infrastructure, access to, quality and affordability of public transportation, national economic growth, economic and political stability, freedom, environmental quality, climate and safety.
Equal owners of productive resources:
In order to provide women with equality and better standard of living ,their contribution and right and access to, use of and control over land and other productive resources are essential .Across the world, there is gender inequality when it comes about the distribution of land and other productive resources is related to women’s poverty and exclusion. Hurdles and difficulty which women face which prevent women’s access to, use of and control over land and other productive resources often include inadequate legal standards and/or ineffective implementation at national and local levels, as well as discriminatory cultural attitudes and practices at the institutional and community level.
Increased partnership in economic and commercial sectors: women also carry equal share in economic and commercial sectors distribution. It is also because they also play role in the economic and commercial development of the country. Therefore it is necessary that increased share should be provided to women.
Higher literacy level and education: it is necessary to bring women on the upfront and for that education of women plays a very important role.
Achievement of self reliance self confidence, and self respect: All the three components are necessary to empower women in today’s world.
Furthermore, education , employment context with outside world,: Personality development: Empowerment of women enhances the quality and the quantity of human resources available for development. One of the main procedural issues about human rights and development is empowerment.
Economic independence , institutional and legal support : promotion of women wings and activists are the perquisites for the empowerment women.
These are the social measures that needs to be taken to give sustainable power to women.
Ways to empower women:
1)Boost her self-esteem. Strong women make other women feel strong and special—so encourage the women and appreciate the women around you. Encourage your friends to speak up and make sure they know the value of their opinions, so that they’re never scared to use their voice.
2. Don’t show women the negative picture.
Women are every now and then exposed to negativity of tv , magazines and social media which disturbs their mind and have a bad impact on their image.
3. Speak honestly and be open minded.
This one can be not as simple because it may cost you a lot in some situations. Sometimes it can be difficult to share your situations with others, but it can play an important role in giving other women a voice.
4) others set example for a young girl:This is one of the most important ways you can empower women. Young women are deeply influenced by their role models, so make sure you’re a good one. Celebrate different types of beauty, empower women with kindness and strength, and encourage women to make their aspirations a reality.
5). Economic empowerment:
It allows women to get benefit from resources, assets, and income. It also helps the ability to manage risk and improve women's life. It can result in ways to support trivialized genders in a particular political or social context.
Perception versus reality:
Empowerment is necessary to establish equality between men and women, when they will get empowered , they will get better control on labour,income, sexuality, reproduction, and mobility. It is a way to economic independence, high self esteem, and self confidence.
It can be said that in the traditional and patriarchal society of Pakistan. Women are expected to be dependent upon men. Much of the role of Pakistani women in politics is determined through custom and traditional of the community and thus it is via customary law that Pakistani women politicians, enjoy certain rights and privileges, however, the findings of the current research process, that women parliamentarians enjoy practices .
